This brief describes the key characteristics of recent developments in state efforts to support adult learners. As states continue to recognize the importance of adult learners and lifelong learning in meeting the state’s workforce needs, these new approaches provide potential examples for state policymakers. However, evidence demonstrating the success of this sort of statewide effort remains elusive, particularly in terms of demonstrating increased postsecondary attainment for adults. This is largely because much of this work is still in its early stages. In a few more years, data on the postsecondary progression of adult learners supported by these efforts will be available and may yield additional information on how best to support adult learners.
