HEI invites you to get to know The Steve Fund for our latest client spotlight! The Steve Fund is a non-profit organization of multicultural experts dedicated to promoting stigma-reducing knowledge and dialogue, developing high impact strategies, and delivering effective programs, services and technical assistance that build understanding and assistance for the mental health and emotional well-being of the nation’s young people of color. The Steve Fund’s signature work involves partnering with higher education institutions, nonprofits, community organizations, and high schools to offer seminars and workshops addressing mental health of young people of color. The sessions are created and facilitated by racially diverse and multicultural mental health experts to promote the mental health and emotional well-being of students of color. Seminars help faculty, staff administrators and counselors to increase awareness of mental health and gain skills to support their students or employees. Additionally, workshops help to equip students with the knowledge and skills to maintain positive mental health and well-being throughout their life and academic transitions. These seminars and workshops are available both in person and virtually, live or recorded, making them widely accessible.
The Steve Fund takes mental health awareness and support for higher education institutions a step further with their Equity in Mental Health Campus Initiative (ECMC). Equity in Mental Health on Campus is a national program of comprehensive higher education support that is based on a set of ten tested recommendations which draws from the Equity in Mental Health Framework implemented over two years at campuses of varied types. During their participation, institutions intentionally address their campus racial climate, policies, programs and services to better support the mental health and emotional well-being of students of color. The Steve Fund adopts an equity-minded approach with this initiative to acknowledge the racial and ethnic inequities students of color face in their lives.
The Steve Fund also offers consulting services for college staff to inform and support their efforts to meet the mental health needs of students of color. The focus of the consultation services is to support colleges and universities as they pursue mental health and wellness for all students, with a strong lens on the too frequently unmet needs of young people of color. The expertise of the consultant team is in assisting higher education institutions transform their resources and services to better serve the mental health and emotional needs of BIPOC students, staff and faculty.
